Chaptify

Goodreads alternatives: 7 reading apps compared

The main Goodreads alternatives are StoryGraph, for stats and mood-based recommendations; Fable, for book clubs; Hardcover and LibraryThing, for tracking and cataloguing; and Bookly, Bookmory and Chaptify, for timing your reading and keeping a streak. Amazon has owned Goodreads since 2013, and none of the seven lists Amazon as its owner. We make Chaptify, which imports from Goodreads and doesn't use AI.

A disclosure first: we make Chaptify, one of the apps below. Every other app is described from its own App Store listing and website, checked on 23 September 2026, and each section says what that app does better than ours.

"Not in its listing" means the app's App Store description doesn't mention the feature. It doesn't mean the app can't do it.

Which Goodreads alternatives aren't owned by Amazon?

Of the apps here, Goodreads is the one Amazon owns: Amazon announced it was buying Goodreads in March 2013. The others are published under their own companies on the App Store (The StoryGraph Limited, Fable Group, Hardcover LLC, LibraryThing.com, TWODOOR GAMES, TonySoft and Chaptify LLC), and none of their listings mentions Amazon ownership. StoryGraph's listing asks readers to "support an independent, Goodreads alternative".

One nuance: LibraryThing's listing says it "relies on data from Amazon" for its book records, alongside more than 65 million library records.

Which Goodreads alternatives don't use AI?

Chaptify doesn't use AI. Its recommendations aren't produced by AI or machine learning, and nothing in the app is written by AI: no generated summaries, reviews or reading profiles.

Of the others, StoryGraph says in its listing that it does: its recommendations come from "machine learning AI", and it suggests reading buddies the same way. None of the other listings here mentions AI. That isn't the same as not using it, so if avoiding AI matters to you, read the app's privacy policy or ask the developer before you move your library.

StoryGraph as a Goodreads alternative

StoryGraph covers most of what Goodreads does, with more stats. Its listing describes a Goodreads import that brings across your read, currently-reading, to-read and did-not-finish shelves, charts of your reading, mood-based search, buddy reads, reading challenges and opt-in streaks.

  • Better than Chaptify for: detailed reading stats and charts, finding books by mood and pace, and bringing a Goodreads library across in one step.
  • Less suited to: timing reading sessions, which isn't in its listing.

Fable as a Goodreads alternative

Fable is built around book clubs. Its listing describes clubs for books and TV shows with spoiler-free chapter rooms, daily reading streaks with a home-screen widget, a Goodreads and Kindle import, and its own ebook store and reader.

  • Better than Chaptify for: joining or running book clubs, reading and annotating ebooks inside the app, and editing a streak after you forget to log a day.
  • Less suited to: readers who want a tracker without clubs, TV shows or a store.

Hardcover as a Goodreads alternative

Hardcover describes itself as "a book tracking app with a social side, built for readers, not algorithms." Its listing covers lists, tags, friends, reviews, reading goals and stats, and profiles that can be public, private or friends-only.

  • Better than Chaptify for: a Goodreads-style social tracker with fine control over who sees your reading.

LibraryThing as a Goodreads alternative

LibraryThing is a cataloguing tool first. Its app lets members catalogue books, DVDs and CDs by searching or scanning barcodes. It has been free to all since March 2020, with a promise of no ads for registered users.

  • Better than Chaptify for: cataloguing a large home library, including media other than books.
  • Less suited to: building a daily reading habit. Its app listing doesn't mention goals, timers or streaks.

Bookly as a Goodreads alternative

Of these apps, Bookly is the most similar to Chaptify. Its listing describes a reading timer, stats including reading speed and estimated finish time, streaks, reminders, readathon tracking and character notes, with no account needed. Pro is a subscription, from $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year.

  • Better than Chaptify for: detailed per-book stats, such as your reading speed and when you'll finish at your current pace, and using the app with no account at all.
  • Less suited to: reading with friends, which its listing doesn't mention.

Bookmory as a Goodreads alternative

Bookmory combines a reading timer, daily and yearly goals and a streak with a reading journal: notes, highlighted quotes, and text extracted from photos of pages. The free version shows ads, and Premium removes them.

  • Better than Chaptify for: keeping a reading journal with notes and quotes.

Chaptify as a Goodreads alternative

Chaptify is the app we make, and it's built around the daily reading habit: a Pomodoro reading timer that logs each session, a streak that a single missed day doesn't break, reading stats, shelves with no limit on how many books you track for free, a friends feed, and a live map of other readers in a session. It imports your Goodreads library, and it doesn't use AI.

  • What it's for: readers who want to read more consistently, not just keep a list.
  • Worth knowing: it's iPhone only, requires iOS 16.4 or later, and is new. It launched in December 2025.

How to move your books from Goodreads

Export your library from Goodreads, then import the file into the new app.

  1. On the Goodreads website, open My Books, then Import and export.
  2. Choose Export library. Goodreads prepares a CSV file with your books, shelves, ratings and dates.
  3. In the new app, find its import option and upload the file. StoryGraph, Fable and Chaptify all import from Goodreads.

Your Goodreads account stays as it is until you delete it, so you can try an app before you switch.

How we compared these Goodreads alternatives

Every fact about the other apps comes from the app's own App Store listing (US store, 23 September 2026) or its own website, linked in the sources below. We describe what each listing says, not the results of testing every feature ourselves, which is why the table says "Not in its listing" rather than "No". Prices are the US prices on the App Store and change often. We haven't included apps that aren't on the App Store, because Chaptify is iPhone only and the comparison should be like for like. We re-check this page every three months.
