Reading time and reading goals
How long books take, and how much a day a goal really asks for.
Reading the whole King James Bible takes about 51 to 55 hours of silent reading at average adult speeds, or about 72 hours read aloud. By our count it is 789,633 words across 1,189 chapters. About 10 minutes a day, or three to four chapters, finishes it in a year.
We counted the words in the full text of 72 classics. At the average adult reading speed for fiction, 260 words a minute, The Great Gatsby takes about 3 hours 6 minutes, Pride and Prejudice about 7 hours 49 minutes, Moby-Dick about 13 hours 28 minutes and War and Peace, at 564,305 words, about 36 hours 10 minutes.
The average adult reads English silently at 238 words a minute for non-fiction and 260 for fiction, according to Marc Brysbaert's 2019 meta-analysis of 190 studies and 18,573 readers. At 275 words a page, that is about 52 pages an hour for non-fiction and 57 for fiction. Reading aloud averages 183 words a minute.

Reading statistics
What surveys actually measure about how much people read.
The median American adult read 2 books in 2025, while the mean was 8, according to a YouGov poll of 2,203 US adult citizens in December 2025. The gap exists because a few heavy readers read most of the books. Pew found 75% of adults read at least part of a book in the past year.
To read more books, set a daily reading time you can keep, because time per day decides the total. At the average adult reading speed, about 11 minutes a day finishes 12 books a year, 21 minutes finishes 24, and 44 minutes finishes 50, with 300-page books. Shorter books, audiobooks and quitting books you're not enjoying all add to the count.
A reading streak counts the days in a row you've read. Apps count them differently: Apple Books counts days you reach a daily goal, 5 minutes by default; StoryGraph lets you set the amount and the period, and gives you until the next period to catch up; Chaptify doesn't break a streak for a single missed day.
To track your reading, record each book when you start and finish it, and log the minutes or pages you read each day. A notebook, a spreadsheet or an app all work, and the best one is the one you'll keep up. Our free spreadsheet template counts your books, pages and reading streak for you.
To build a reading habit, pick a small daily amount, such as 10 pages or 15 minutes, and tie it to something you already do every day, like finishing dinner. In the best-known study of habit formation, a daily behaviour took a median of 66 days to become automatic, and missing a single day did not undo the progress.

Focus and reading sessions
Timed sessions, the Pomodoro Technique, and staying with a page.
To use the Pomodoro Technique for reading, set a timer for 25 minutes and read one book until it rings, then take a 3 to 5 minute break, and a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes after every four. At the average adult reading speed, one Pomodoro covers about 24 pages of a novel.

Choosing a reading tracker
Honest comparisons, including where other apps do better.
The main Goodreads alternatives are StoryGraph, for stats and mood-based recommendations; Fable, for book clubs; Hardcover and LibraryThing, for tracking and cataloguing; and Bookly, Bookmory and Chaptify, for timing your reading and keeping a streak. Amazon has owned Goodreads since 2013, and none of the seven lists Amazon as its owner. We make Chaptify, which imports from Goodreads and doesn't use AI.
